Hello!  I am Cari from over at Time for Play.  I am super excited to be featured here today...thank you so much Jenn!!

I was an early childhood educator for over a decade before having my own children.  Currently, I am a SAHM to 3 and 4 year old energy rockets.  They keep me hopping all day long and I am always looking for ways to keep them busy.  I began blogging our experiences to share with other parents and educators that you don't have to spend a lot of money or loads of time to provide learning rich activites for you kids.  Most of my ideas can be done with what you can find in your kitchen pantry or backyard.  Simple, easy, cheap, fun, educational, and usually messy.  Come on over and play with us!!

Fishing for Ice

This was a major hit with my two.  We have done it many times.  We froze some colored water in snack cups.  When frozen, we popped out the ice cubes and put them in a tub.  The kids poured in some water while I cut some yarn pieces.  The process is simple enough, just place the yarn on top of a piece of ice then sprinkle with salt.  The yarn will stick to the ice and you can "fish" out the ice from the water.  There are a couple tricks that we have discovered.  You have to use a lot of salt, let the salt set for a minute before trying to pull up on it (a good time to practice counting), and, it helps if the yarn is wet before trying to fish with it.

Happy Fishing!

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Cari! Ice Fishing looks like so much fun and definitely a great experiment. I can see us doing this in the Winter months in the bath tub and in the summer in the swimming pool too!

Make sure you stop on over to Time for Play today for more great childhood inspiration!
