St Patrick's Activity A Day Countdown Calendar

St Patrick's Day is next month so I've been busy working on an activity a day countdown calendar for kids that I know you will love!

I've made 8 pages of activity cards filled with Montessori inspired activities. Activities encourage imagination and teach skills in math, music, language arts, geography, science and art. They also include fun games to teach fine motor and gross motor skills. All activities require little prep work and can be done with things you already have at home or can acquire easily and on a budget.

All The Colours Of The Rainbow

This week my son & I have been working on learning colours & making rainbows. Here are 2 of the science/ sensory activities we did:

Make a Rainbow

What you need:
-Shallow dish
-1 cup of whole milk
-Red, blue & yellow food colouring
-Liquid Dish Soap

What to do:
-Pour 1 cup of milk into the bowl.
-Add 3 drops of red food colouring to one edge of the bowl
-1/3 of the way away, add 3 drops of blue food colouring
- 1/3 of the way away add 3 drops of yellow don't mix or jiggle the bowl.
-Squeeze a drop of dish soap in the center of the bowl and watch what happens!

What happens: The dish soap does not mix with the milk. Instead it floats on top and spreads over the surface. As it spreads, it grabs the food colour we dropped into it. Where the colours meet, they combine to form new colours.

My son loved this activity. He kept saying "Wow!" & his eyes were big. He was so amazed watching the colours.

Muffin Tin Mixing

What you need:
-Muffin tin
-Food Colouring
-Medicine dropper
-Water

What to do:
-Fill the muffin tin 3/4 full of water
-Add food colouring to the water
(I made one red, one blue & one yellow. The rest I didn't add colouring to)
-Using the dropper mix different colours together

As you can see K loved this activity too. I worried it might be a bit too hard for a 17 month old but he figured out how to use the dropper & we mixed colours together. K loved watching the colours change & learned the words "een" (green) & red. We did this for nearly an hour which is crazy considering his usual time span for any activity is a max. of 2 minutes on any given day.

Just be warned, there will most likely be tears when you try & pack it away & you'll probably have to do it over & over & OVER again. Oh..& careful with the blue colouring....I may have inadvertently coloured K's hands green. Just getting in the spirit of St. Patricks day right?

St Patricks Day Songs & Fingerplays

Well I'm a little late in finishing compiling all the songs & fingerplays for St Patricks day that I had on my other computer. Please forgive me for that. My son hasn't been sleeping well & we've been dealing with having a mouse (mice?!) in the house. Hopefully, this booklet comes to you with enough time to put it to good use over the next week & for years to come!

The songs & fingerplays in this book are recommended for toddlers & preschoolers but can also be used for English as a Second Language learners. Please note that the songs & fingerplays in this book have been compiled from various people, books, teaching aids & internet resources over the past decade & unfortunately their original origins are not known. It is copyrighted to Delicious Ambiguity Blog & is for personal use only.

I'd appreciate it if you would leave a comment should you download it & become a Follower of my blog if you haven't already. If you write about it on your blog please link back to Delicious Ambiguity Blog.

There are some great songs & fingerplays in this book that are recommended for felt board use. If you do come up with a felt board scene I'd love to see it & if you have a favorite St Patricks day song or fingerplay I haven't mentioned I'd love to hear about it as well. I love comments!

DIY Edible Fingerpaint & Fingerprint Rainbows

Yesterday I made fingerpaint & then K & I made fingerprint rainbows. We had such a great time. Here are the directions:

DIY Edible Fingerpaint
(Recipe taken from Our Best Bites)

This recipe is edible because it is not harmful if consumed,
which is really important when you have a toddler that puts EVERYTHING in their mouth.
However, its really not tasty nor meant to be eaten.

What you need:
-3T sugar
-1/2 C cornstarch
-2 C cold water
-food colouring

What to do:
-Mix sugar & cornstarch together in a saucepan.
-Add cold water & combine with a whisk.
-Cook on medium heat until the mixture thickens to a thin pudding consistency
(Stop the cooking process a little before its the consistency that you like
 because it thickens upon standing)
-Cool & separate into bowls
-Colour as desired

Fingerprint Rainbows
This fingerprint rainbow is a fun activity for toddlers that is perfect for
St Patrick's Day or a rainbow theme.

What you need:
-Fingerpaint for all the colors of the rainbow
-Paintbrush
-Paper
-A wet cloth to clean your childs hands

What to do:
-Using your paint brush, paint the sides of your child's fingers on both hands with red paint.
-Shape them into an arch and print on to the paper.
-Repeat with the rest of the rainbow colours, making the arches smaller and smaller.

My son didn't like having the sides of his hands painted so in the beginning this led to tears.  After a while we made fingerprint rainbows & I allowed K to smudge the paint. It looks beautiful when we were finished even though we didn't use our arches the whole time. We both loved making these & I hung our rainbows on our wall. Every time he looks up & tells me it's pretty & smiles. A job well done! :)
