DIY Edible Fingerpaint & Fingerprint Rainbows

Yesterday I made fingerpaint & then K & I made fingerprint rainbows. We had such a great time. Here are the directions:

DIY Edible Fingerpaint
(Recipe taken from Our Best Bites)

This recipe is edible because it is not harmful if consumed,
which is really important when you have a toddler that puts EVERYTHING in their mouth.
However, its really not tasty nor meant to be eaten.

What you need:
-3T sugar
-1/2 C cornstarch
-2 C cold water
-food colouring

What to do:
-Mix sugar & cornstarch together in a saucepan.
-Add cold water & combine with a whisk.
-Cook on medium heat until the mixture thickens to a thin pudding consistency
(Stop the cooking process a little before its the consistency that you like
 because it thickens upon standing)
-Cool & separate into bowls
-Colour as desired

Fingerprint Rainbows
This fingerprint rainbow is a fun activity for toddlers that is perfect for
St Patrick's Day or a rainbow theme.

What you need:
-Fingerpaint for all the colors of the rainbow
-A wet cloth to clean your childs hands

What to do:
-Using your paint brush, paint the sides of your child's fingers on both hands with red paint.
-Shape them into an arch and print on to the paper.
-Repeat with the rest of the rainbow colours, making the arches smaller and smaller.

My son didn't like having the sides of his hands painted so in the beginning this led to tears.  After a while we made fingerprint rainbows & I allowed K to smudge the paint. It looks beautiful when we were finished even though we didn't use our arches the whole time. We both loved making these & I hung our rainbows on our wall. Every time he looks up & tells me it's pretty & smiles. A job well done! :)
